Used Hennessy, Wouldn't it be ok for a starter?

I found an old Hennesssy Hammock on line for 45 bucks. It is Yellow, bottem entry, bug net, rain fly. That's all the seller knows. Why wouldn't this be a cheap way to see if I like hammocks? I've never been in one, but thinking it would be great in the boundary waters in July. What am I missing?

If it's the complete package including the suspension, this would be a great start. I would go for it...worst case, you can resell it.

However, just make sure, if you can, that the fabric is still good.

being very inexperienced, I would say the immediate and really biggest gamble is age and strength. If it was stored badly or is very old and absorbed a lot of sun and UV, the fabric could be old and you could find yourself taking a sudden, hopefully short, descent to your backside.

But that's mostly based on general experience with old fabric in genereal, not hammocking in particular

Easily replaced with almost any sort of wide webbing

Hennessys are very well built and designed hammocks, very simple straight forward and solid. My only concern might be the size. The most common Hennissy model is the Expedition. I am 6ft tall and 165 lbs. and have used the Exped quite a bit but it is just too small for me. Hennessy lists the exped as good for up to 6ft height but that is not optimum it is the limit. It would work ok for a hammock to get started with though. Once I got a larger hammock I slept much better. I kept one of my Hennessys hung outdoors 24/7 for over a year so I could use it more regularly and the only thing that shows any wear at all is the tarp. After 400+ days of exposure the tarp is a little faded and has two very small holes. After getting washed the hammock looks almost new.
