That is a fair suspicion, but there is some precedent to it.
I know of at least 2 veteran hangers that experienced exactly what you are talking about; long established hammock that disintegrates without warning.

ENOs always seem to be the hammock in these stories. It's very weird. Infrequent, but weird.

Although I've not used any of the other brands, I do find my ENO to be of very light nylon.
When I was looking at rip-stop at the fabric shop, most where of a heavier material. Even my backpacker's tent is a heavier material and it's the lightest nylon I've used.

I'm wondering if the combination of light weight nylon and time could be the issue.

SOrry guys been very busy, and I hope to answer some questions you all have...

When I purchased the hammock, I did find a small hole in it, I called ENO and they sent me a repair kit free of charge, I actually wanted a new hammock, since it was brand new...but, it is what it is....
After every hike, the go through all my equipment very extensively, I want what I have to last, so I clean, wash, wipe, etc. to make sure it is in tip top shape.
The rip was at the foot end of the hammock in the center, you can see clearly it was a tear, and not a cut....very strange. I have yet to hear back from ENO to see their answer.

While I think ENO is still a good hammock, I believe its a very good hammock to start in....

Hmm. The hole was in the foot end? Makes sense. This area takes the most abuse with frequent foot movement. If a hole was in that area, it'd be prone to lots of rubbing which would further compromise the fabric. Stupid question, but did you ever wear shoes or sandals while laying in the hammock? From the way you said you really took care of the hammock, I doubt you'd ever wear shoes while laying in it, but figured I'd ask. Obviously that would compound the situation.

I'm really surprised the store you bought it from didn't replace it. If there was a hole in it before you even used it, I'd have raised bloody hell. Too late now. Sucks you had to go thru this. But at least ya got two good years in. :-D

    Eno Problems

I've got a DN ENO. Love the ENO. Let me know what they do with the hammock you sent back. This makes me want to inspect my gear. Just got off BMT last weekend doing 20 miles. This is my first season hanging and I'm planning on putting lots more miles with my ENO.

Most fall outs I've heard of happen after about 2 yrs of use. Has anyone heard of a fairly new ENO ripping?

My ENO is at least 4 years old with no issues...yet. As long as it can last untill my Danger Bird gets here I'll be ok.

I've noticed on the ENO web site that their weight limits seem a lot higher than other hammock providers. I have a couple ENOs, but tend to use them only once or twice before I get something else. The fabric they use just seems a lot weaker than others, 400 lbs seem like a lot when compared to hammocks which have a 250 lbs limit. But I don't have a lab to prove it.

    And the verdict is in.....

Just received a letter from ENO ( forum letter ) saying sorry about your luck....
If I wanted, they would take 5% off my next purchase from their site.. So, here is my conclusion.....

I have another hammock, and I'll not go back to an ENO. I still believe it is a good "starter" hammock...
I'm disappointed they didn't back up their product, as I still believe it was a manufacturing error. but it is what it is....Live and Learn.
and in conclusion, I'll not endorse ENO again, while I will not go out of my way to "trash" them, if asked..I will speak my thoughts on craftsmanship, and integrity of the management.
