varavild's "Single Tree Hammock Setup" video

I searched a little but didn't see mention of this guy's single tree setup. He has lots of other entertaining videos on his channel as well.

I tried it in the backyard and it works great!

I secured one end of the hammock to a tree using a strap and whoopie. A 6-foot scrap piece of 2"x2" served as a pole, which I connected to the hammock and a short fence post with mule tape--thanks JohnSawyer! I used a pair of Siberian/Evenk hitches that Peter uses in the video to keep the pole in place, and a trucker's hitch to secure the pole to the fence post.

I was hanging just a few inches off of the ground (just in case!) but after a couple hours of hanging, many times in and out of the hammock, and some vigorous swinging I have plenty of confidence in the setup. Even the dog approved and hopped in with me.

EDIT: The hammock in the video is very taut, but I was able to get a great hang with a gathered end hammock.

I've used that method before running the strap/line through a V-notch cut in one end of a 2x4 and then anchored to the bumper of my car instead of a log. Just make sure the ground end of the pole is secure so it can't kick out on you. I dug a small hole which seemed to work well. The pole will sway some as shown in the video but will not fall over.

Here's an example of Risk using just one strap to support the movable pole. Maybe this is what Miguel was also describing.

Wow, that single-tree setup is mind boggling. I guess when the pole is moving off to one side the length of the path from tree to pole to anchor gets longer, so moving away from the centerline lifts the center of gravity for the whole setup, making a return to centerline the natural reaction. I never would have guessed that would be how the setup behaves.

    Holy strung tight hammock, batman??

Ive done something similar before. One end of the hammock was on a big tree. No other sizable trees nearby, so I wrapped the suspension around a small tree, then tied it down to the base of another small tree.

It kept the small main tree from bending.
