    Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Well, I have lived in NE Ohio all my life (18 Years), and yesterday I was offered a job working at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in North Carolina. This is an area I have never been to, and never really had a desire to visit because I'm more into the western states in the mountains. BUT, since I was offered this job, I'm looking more into the area. I have found that there are many campsite and everything, but I'm curious about backpacking. A google search turned nothing up, so I turned here to see if anyone knows anything about backpacking in this area or very close to it.

What can you guys tell me about this area? and the backpacking possibilities?

Don't know anything about backpacking possibilities there, but the Outer Banks are beautiful. One of my favorite places in the world.

I've been there a few times, and my take on the area was that it's more about ocean-oriented activities like fishing, surfing, etc. You're a good 7 hours from the mountains/Appalachian Trail and I think they call the area between the ocean and the mountains the "low lands." There's a ton of camping (RV/Cabins/tents too I think) in the area, but I just don't recall seeing folks backpacking. On a different note, they are in the process of building a "Mountains to Sea" Trail which sounds pretty cool. Here's a link: http://www.ncparks.gov/About/trails_mst.php

Having grown up in the midwest (Oklahoma)...I have to say I love living in Virginia (right above NC) much more. You're closer to a lot of things and well...can't beat the Appalachian Mountains that run up the coast!
    This is my signature.

Thank you for the input guys. I understand its a bit away from the mountains, who knows, maybe I could just backpack up the shore. Thanks for that link as well, I'm definitely gonna check that out if I go.

Welcome to the madness and North Carolina.

The best hiking trail (with camping opportunities) east of I 95 in NC will be the Neusiok Trail. Merchants Mill Pond State Park also has a couple of hiking trails (the longest being 7 miles) with camping.

While the MST (Mountains to the Sea Trail) starts or ends (depending on which direction you are going) on the Outer Banks, it consist of hiking along roads in Eastern NC ( except the Neusiok Trail portion )

Just beware that summer time in eastern NC is not the best time to camp out due to the heat, high humidity and bugs (ticks, dear flies and skeeters). make sure your hammock has a bug net as you will need it.

Of course we do have the best BBQ in NC Just ask Shug

    Cape Hatteras National Seashore

I live in the Piedmont area of NC just about dead center of the state. There are some nice places to hike not far from here without going all the way to the mountains in the far west of the state, but that still is a few hours drive. It is pretty darn flat but wonderful at the Outer Banks. I am especially a big fan of Ocracoke Island. I hope all goes well with your decision.

Well dang. I was really hoping for some good long trails. That's good to know about all the bugs. I hadn't really thought about it (but ill get to put my net to use!) maybe if I do move down there for the summer (very likely) I can join you guys for a hang or two.

Funny, I had dinner with an attorney from the Park Service last night. He and his family love it here because of all the outdoor activities ... but not for hiking.

As someone mentioned, we have miles and miles of open beach ... but no remote camping is permitted. You could, theoretically, hike the beach from the NPS campground in Salvo to the NPS campground on Ocracoke ... with a 90 minute ferry ride in the middle. (Have not measured it, but I'll bet it's a 30 to 40 mile hike on the sand.)

There are no long trails east of I-95 that can be called "wilderness" hiking (other than the 7 mi. trail at Merchants Millpond mentioned above). If you are willing to consider an alternative, I can put you on to some very good kayak camping trails that I enjoy ... true remote camping in uninhabited places.

    Welcome to the OBX!

It is very hot, humid and buggy for hanging here in the summer. The other nine months of the year are terrific.
