Most expensive IX-like UQ ever - and it is awesome!

55" Samsung LED tv (save thin foam bag tv is surrounded by)
46" Samsung LED tv (save thin foam bag tv is surrounded by)
32" LG LED tv (save thin foam bag tv is surrounded by)
    $1/yd nylon from Walmart

When I purchased these tvs over the last 2-3 years I saved the thin foam bags they shipped in thinking I would use it for something someday.

I sewed up a 4-layer extremely light-weight underquilt for my son's hammock on Friday morning. I salvaged 2 layers from the 55" tv and 1 each from the other two tvs.

Outer layer of foam is 44"x58" with 2 3.5" darts along the short side, next layer 42"x58" with 2-2.5" darts along the short side, next layer 40"x58" with 1-3" dart on the short side, inside layer 38"x58" with 1-1" dart on the short side. Outer nylon shell is the same size as the outer foam layer 44"x58" with 2 3.5" darts. The inner nylon shell is the same size as the inner layer of foam 38"x58" with 1-1" dart.

All laters were sewn together along the outer edge (along with the shells). 2" grosgrain folded over and sewn to the edge to make a channel for the bungie cords.

The UQ performed AWESOMELY this weekend.

Did you have issues with the foam ripping? if so how did you combat it?

The foam didn't rip while constructing. The temp got down to 41-42 on Friday night. Last night it got down to 50-51.

Good to know, now I just wish I could find some of this fabled 1$ ripstop.

Yeah - wish Wallyworld still had their $1 table/rack. I've had this for quite a while now. I have about 4-5 yards left. At one time I had several yards of a few different colors for $1/yard. I've gone through it making hammocks, under quilts, and stuff sacks over the years.

I have been saving my TV covers and have now found a good reason to use up some WM nylon... Thanks!

I have acess to a TON of that foam. Can you explain the "darts" to me? I don't understand. Why couldn't you just lay the four layers on top of one another and sew it up?

Very cool - or should I say warm?!?

I know its warm cause I made one the exact same way about a year ago. Been down to 22 degrees with it. I'm surprised more people don't try this.
