Ultimate 3 season Amazon.com hammock setup thread

    Hey guys,

New to the forum and hanging but not new to the outdoors and ground dwelling. I'm searching for a decent 3 season setup and thought it would be fun to start a thread and get some really valuable input from hammock campers on this amazing forum.

    RULES:

Post what you think is the ultimate setup for a 3 season hammock camping setup. Components must be available on Amazon.com - I've got prime with free shipping and this is a requirement for me. ( I got the idea for this after reading the following blog article on http://theultimatehang.com/2013/02/t...ve-than-tents/ )

    Let the games begin!

    Welcome,

The author of that book and blog lives here; dejoha.

I have Amazon prime as well, however I believe by limiting yourself to only Amazon for free shipping will put a hitch into getting the best setup. It may also end up being more expensive.

Here is a "prime" example - your tree straps:

Amazon ENO Atlas Tree Straps $28.25

Strapworks.com Pair 10' long 1" polyester simple slings $18.88 shipped
    (HF's discount code AR15 saves $1.67 above)

There is gear in my rig that was purchased from Amazon though; Black Diamond Carabiners and Nite Ize figure 9s for instance.

You might also want to check out the for sale section of the forum. Used is cheaper than new. I have a Prime account as well but have gotten very few things for hammocking with it. There are other places that will save you money even if you have to pay shipping as mattblick pointed out. There are some good deals on Nite Ize on eBay. The cottage industry guys around here also have competitive prices.

Good question. I wanted a double layer hammock to enable me to place insulation between the layers; I don't believe there are any DLs available from Amazon. The DD was one of the cheapest DL hammocks on the market at the time and I got both items as seconds which saved me even more. Free shipping from the UK was incredibly fast. I have been very pleased with them.

There are now several cottage industry hammocks that would (absent a seconds sale) get my money before DD, such as BIAS (I have their bug net), dream hammock, wilderness logisics, etc.

You will find the full Ultimate hang book on Amazon which I read through several times before saying goodbye to ground dwelling. I think you will also be able to find a very nice tarp on there. You won't find prime eligible zing-it or whoopie slings though.. ;-)

    You

Oh man you are limiting yourself so much by only looking on Amazon. There are so many fantastic cottage shops in the hammock community it really pays off to check them out. That being said, if you must insist on going with Amazon only there are a few things I need to know before I can make an educated recomendation.

    Male or Female?
Hot or cold sleeper? (Is the rating for insulation usually high, low, or spot on for you)
Weight? (don't be shy now and have a swore butt and hurt wallet later)
Intended use? (Long/short distance hiking, car camping, ect)
Average temp range? (3 season has a different meaning in Alaska than Arizona. I see you in SC but you may travel.)
Resources? (How much do you want to spend)
Sewing machine? (Are you willing to DIY somethings)

Give me your best answers to those questions and I will give you me best recomendation recommendation(s).

EDIT: I'm here all night on 3rd shift at work. I got nothing better to do that shop for you.

    Setup from from Amazon

Since I have a Prime Account I'll bite. This is based on what I would buy if going with everything from Amazon just to get me started. There are probably better items out there, but this would work for me.

Hammock: Eno Single Nest - $46.00 I believe this comes with Slap Straps
Tarp: ENO Profly Tarp - $79.95
Top Quilt: Grand Trunk Packable Down Blanket - $82.99 Your gonna need to DIY here
Under Quilt: Grand Trunk Packable Down Blanket - $82.99 Your gonna need to DIY here too

Total cost: $291.93 - no shipping costs

Like everyone else though I think you could do better by watching the for sale thread or picking up items from the Cottage Vendors

    Male
    Hot sleeper
    245 lb 6'3" linebacker
Temps would be 25 degrees and up
    Price range is flexible....300-500
    Hiking and overlanding use
DIY would be my wife's domain. I'd rather get something that fits than try and seamstress something that does not...

being a CERTIFIABLE CHEAPSTEAK, on a fix'd income, i am always on the quest of the best bang for my buck

your rules have narrowed your possible solutions, unbelievably so...

the above suggestions to look @ used stuff on this forum & to look into other sources that offer FREE SHIPPING are very sound

another example would be FLEABAY, which has 2 buttons in their search refinement column, that i usually click

    FREE SHIPPING & BUY NOW

those 2, in combination, let you know exactly what you pay, to your door

and frequently you can avoid paying sales tax, depending on your local

THE HORIZON can be quite wide

i, respectfully, suggest you REMOVE THE BLINDERS

thanks for the feedback! I will need to broaden my Amazon requirements it appears.

What would be the proper subset of gear be for a 4 day through hike of the lineville gorge in NC during May? Temps will vary. Bugs and rain will be a given.

I'm willing to sacrifice weight for comfort but I'm not interested in lugging a lead ballast in my pack!
