    Yoga mat as under pad/quilt?

I searched this site for yoga mats being used as under pad/quilt.... And found nothing. I did find information on yoga mats being used as pads inside your hammock. I would like to have the yoga mat on the outside. Yoga mats seem to be closed cell, so therefore a under cover would not be needed....right? The coldest temp that I would be camping in is 30 degrees.

    Anyone try this?

I took a look at them as Blue pads are getting harder to find - too heavy and $30-$40 there are better options.

Several people have left comments on threads stating they use yoga mats. I picked up a couple to give it a shot as they'd be easier for the kiddo to carry. I'll let ya know how that goes after Friday.

I used one last time on Florida Hang 2 down to ~25 with only cold feet. It was inside the hammy not outside. And I had my Sleeping bag around the hammock and ridgeline as a peapod.
I think the pad on the outside might not be the best choice since it is going to be harder to bend to the correct shape and you may have too many gaps for cold to enter. Inside the hammy, your weight shapes it to the hammy. There may be better choices for close to the price, if that's what your looking at.

I have used only the SB inside the hammy since then due to the coldest being mid 40's for my coldest since FH2 on Jan 2012.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

I put one inside the hammock under my 7 year old nephew Friday night with a sleeping bag. Got down to 35* and he said he was warm all night.

A CCF blue pad from Walmart or other stores is cheaper. Putting it on the outside may be problematic. Suspending it properly would be difficult I think. It would likely not do as good a job keeping you warm. People that use pads often have cold shoulders and sides hence the reason many make SPE's (segmented pad extenders).

I tried a thin (but surprisingly heavy) yoga mat in the hammock in my back yard. It's definitely warm, but it kind of crinkled up and slid around a lot. I'm back to my Reflectix pad.

I just got a "gym rubber" 1/4" (Polyvinyl Chloride Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) mat from the foam factory near my house. It is very squishy and pretty light though I do not have a scale I can weigh it on. I have now used it once in my basement and was quite warm BUT it is only about 55 degrees in the basement. I have been having a problem with my UQ shifting on me in the middle of the night and wake up with a cold shoulder. This did not happen with the mat. I have it between layers of the hammock. I cannot even tell it is there except for the warmth
