After several hundred or thousand people wrap their huggers around the trees in California, the reaction may not be good for the future of hammock hanging.

Someone should prepare an approach that ensures a good result, so that people think of hammock hangers as respectful of trees, and of such gatherings as harmless to trees.

    Be nice to trees!

I agree. We would have to come up with a mandatory on tree huggers. Iknow many people that might own a hammock have bever even heard of a tree hugger. Maybe we could get a bunch of us DIYers to make a mess load of them to donate to the event...WHEREVER it will be held.

Joning the party late. I am still a lawyer and have set up Non-Profits before. I would be willing to help when that step becomes a necessity. There are two big steps involved 1) Setting up as a non-profit in the state of choice (a fairly easy process) 2) Getting 501(c)3 status from the IRS to be able to give a tax deduction to donors (a much more substantial investement). FWIW I am happy to help if I can.

Thanks Ashman! FWIW, I always have to be careful typing your name; I'm worried of an extra "s". Now that I know you're an attorney, I'm gonna be extra careful. No doubt your assistance will be valuable. I want to make sure if we do this, we do it right!

I personally don't think trees should even be a topic; way too much risk of doing damage, especially with that many people hanging. We would have to have stormtroopers wandering the woods; nobody likes that. Pipe stands can be built easily and relatively inexpensively. This is where sponsorships come in to play; in exchange for $x,xxx, you can have your company name and logo on x number of stands. The sponsors pay for it and we don't worry about reputation risk involved with any visiable damage to trees. It just isn't worth the risk.

Now then, if we break off into smaller hang-outs after the festival. Well, that's just an entirely different story.

My name is Ashley, I use Ashman as a moniker to avoid online gender confusion! Now that you mention it, it reminds me of the Sienfeld episode where Kramer wound up with the vanity plate for the proctologist!
