The only thing I leave in my pack is a lighter, first aid, chap stick, pack rain cover, headlamp, and my trowel. Everything else I lay out on my ping pong table a day or two before I leave. Like mentioned, packing is a lot of fun and a good way to build excitement.

I keep a bunch of car camping gear (minus the down) in the car for when I impulsively want to get out but pack individually for most trips.

I custom pack for every single trip; having said that I have basic systems. What I mean by that is I have my basic first aide kit, cook kit, lighting, blade, sleeping kit, etc. From there I add or take away depending on the specific trip and weather. My basic setup is my standard 2 day, 1 night UL set up. I tailor it from there.

By setting it up like this (key pieces as systems) I can easily pack out for a trip in under an hour including customizing my clothing selection and food.

I have everything on a spreadsheet; that helps keep my head organized as I pack. My basic equipment is always the same so it helps me remember. For example I always carry and Esee Candiru fixed blade on my pack's left shoulder strap D ring; I don't deviate from that unless I know this trip is somehow very different. Same thing for light, cook kit, etc. I swap quilts depending on weather. I always carry exactly the same rain gear.

I think you get the picture.

    Enjoy the day
