    Hanging for less than $50

    Yep it can be done
    Tarp 7 yards of fabric = $14
    2 spray cans of water proofing = $11.76
    Hammock 3 yards of fabric = $6
    Straps = $3.49
    Bug Net = $6.98
    Sewing = $0
    Total = $42.23

    I love DIY.
    Yes I know there are a few odds and end that bring the price up, but they were left overs from other projects.

    Thanks for reading

    Well done Bwess. This is my favorite aspect of hammocking. You don't need buckets of money to participate.

    No you really don't.
    Just started to sew and I can't keep a stitch running straight. Looks like a drunk does the sewing on my gear.

    Great setup! The only question I have about it though, what was the waterproofing spray for? If it was to make your tarp, for only $10 more you could get silnylon 2nds and would save the effort of waterproofing. For $2.95 a yard you could also get 70d coated for a weight penalty ($21.00).

    Just food for thought for next time around. It looks great though, and your stitching sounds as good as mine...

    I did not know about the seconds but thanks for the link, I will use them. The fabric I used was readily available at my local Walmart $1.97/yard and since I just started sewing $2 yard wouldn't bother me if I screwed up.

    Touché. The seconds I spoke of is a great way to get a fully functional tarp for minimal money.(not as minimal as your method just less labor intensive) Let us know how well your gear holds up though. If it holds up after a season or two of use, it might be a viable option for future projects that some don't mind spending the time on. I was just introducing diygearsupply so you can find the best deal on sil and other camping fabrics. Enjoy your setup. Mines more "classy" with nothing that matches. Yours looks good, keep it up!

    Where are you getting the $7 bug net? I just picked up 2 ENO RestNests dirt cheap for my Cub Scouting boys, and I need to find an inexpensive bug option.

    Also, what kind of material are you using for the hammock itself? My daughter is a bit jealous that the boys now have their own hammocks and dad didn't buy her one.
