Really, I would recommend a NON WATER BASED seam sealer like seam grip, just for the seams. That spray stuff will only do so much good. I think that the silicone spray will not really even stick to this tarp. Sil sticks and bonds to sil... and not so much other stuff.
I guess that I owe you guys a test using seam grip or other solvent based sealer. I have the GG Emergency shelter, and I will try to make time for a test today or tomorrow.

I too bought this tarp. Did not research well enough with all this water issues. So could one do the make your own seal, with silicon and spirits? Or seam sealing seams and spray sealer the way to go?
If you put silicone/solvent on a sil tarp, then it works great. If you put silicone on PU fabrics, it will usually stick for a little while then peel off and make a big mess, making it harder to use the seam sealer that is made for this material. The cheapest seam sealer that works on this material is e6000 flexible craft adhesive, in my opinion...it just stinks. I hate to use solvents, but that is the only thing that I have seen that works as a permanent seam seal. THat water based stuff is just temporary and the sil based stuff just works on sil...Somebody please correct me if I am wrong. I have used cuben tape to patch a hole in a Kelty Noah 9 PU tarp, and it works too. It is still on there and waterproof after about 2 years.

Bob, I was thinking if the spray I used and the seam sealer fail that I would then try the silicon and mineral spirits combination.
I really like the layout of the tarp the only things I plan to change is the 4 tie-outs at the base and the 2 at the ridge line. They are very poorly stitched on the tarp and will fail soon enough.
Everyone should keep in mind just as SilvrSurfr has said this tarp will leak and you will have to spend some additional money to address that issue not to mention the fact that the tie-outs need work.
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade(pun intended) but I look at this tarp as a 50% DIY project. It is a great buy for the person that doesn't mind doing a little work but doesn't want to build the whole thing from scratch.
That's how I was looking at it. I ended up getting two of the tarps and at $40.00 total that's cheaper than me buying the material and stitching it myself or dumping $70.00+ on a single tarp. Besides, if I don't seal something in spring it doesn't feel like I've properly kicked off camping season.
