It's usually pretty nice, but it all depends. The lake can cause all kinds of problems with the weather up here.

You just need to plan for anything from hot and dry to cold and wet. Once the date gets closer you can prepare better, but even then things can change quickly. That's the same for any time up here.

It is probably one of the safer months as far as decent hiking weather is concerned.
If your lucky enough to be outdoors, your lucky enough!

Mid September into early October is beautiful. We usually go to the Ely area the last week of September. The colors are generally peaking at that time. During the day you may see a few flies if warms up enough 50-65 during the day. Night time gets into the low 30's mid 20's.
Keep in mind the small game hunting season opens around September 15th. You may run into some Grouse hunters on trails. Not a big deal but you might want to wear a blaze orange hat.

My first thru-hike of the SHT was in September and we started on the 10th. Check out Shug's videos as he has some great one that were filmed in September too.

Fronkey, I've watched that whole series a few times. I might try to copy the first half of your trip.

What food did you take with you, and where did you resupply at?

If you want to go light, try to make sure all your food is no less than 130 calories an oz.

The shuttle runs weekends from mid-May to mid-October. It's best to leave your car, ride the shuttle, and hike back to your car.
Earlier in the year is better for water in the small streams but you'll come to a good water source a few times each day.
I live in Finland and that has some nice sections of trail but anything south of Grand Marais is beautiful.
And yes there are bears on the trail, I've seen them. Hang your food away from camp and you shouldn't have a problem though.
    Good luck.

I see this is an old thread, hopefully someone will respond.

I am going to hike the Superior Hiking Trail. I am planning 4 day hike.

What sections of the SHT would you guys recommend?

Thank you. Your help will be much appreciated.

Plan to thru hike the SHT in September and noticed many members on this forum are familiar with the trail. Hoping you would answer a few questions:

    1. How hard is it to hitch a ride from trail to Two Harbors? Are there any transportation services in that area?
    2. Would like to spend the night in Grand Marias, Finland, and Two Harbors. As a generality, is it necessary to call a campground from the trail to make a reservation?
    3. It is my understanding that Northshore Section to Jay Cook Visitors Center is basically a city walk. Does that mean motel to motel? Is it worth doing?
    4. In the typical September, can the respective streams under the Encampment River, Split Rock River Bridge, and Trout Creek Bridge be forded?

    Thanks in advance.
