I want to do some splicing to lash it/zing it, to make my own ridge lines and tie outs for my tarp, and have noticed that all the instructions are for amsteel.
I am pretty sure the process is similar except for the diameter of the cord and the thread count. So can someone tell me what the differences are and what you instrument recommend to do all the inserting and pulling through with, with lash it/zing it.

It's a bit tighter braid in addition to being smaller diameter. so it's not quite as easy as Amsteel, but it's doable. I use a single strand of Network wire (from a Cat5 or Cat6 cable twisted pair) with the insulation still on. A lot of people use guitar strings. Remember to taper the ends first, and don't be afraid to tug hard on your splicing wire to enlarge the hole before pulling the tapered end into it. Then it's a zen thing. Your fingers will teach you the rest of the process.
My (splicing) life got a lot easier when I repurposed some knitting supplies found around the house. I use a small knitting needle to open up my Amsteel, before running the fid through. I use (what I think is) a stitch holder to run through the zing it or tech line. It's got a small diameter and smooth points on both ends of it. Splicing is trivial since I learned to run the needles through, pushing the braiding together the opposite of milking a splice when you're done. (Should we call it "unmilking?") Before I read about it on the forums I felt like my fingers were going to bleed & I rubbed all the color off the line.
+1 with respect to the knitting needles to open the braid. I use a loop turner for my Amsteel and the 2.2mm line but resort to a small wire for the 1.75mm.

I use a loop of the green floral wire. Seems to work well for me on the thin stuff. A pair of reading glasses seem to help as well.

I also use floral wire, twisted with the help of a drill, and .042" solid leader wire folded back onto itself to form a loop.
Just buy your guylines from a vendor....................it's WAY cheaper in the long run

The video illustrates the making of whoopie slings using dynaglide, and for a "fish tool" he uses a piece of wire normally used in hanging false ceilings. Just today I made a pair of whoopies using his instructions, but using a piece of wire from my wife's jewelry-making kit. The wire is found in the crafts section of walmart and it is inexpensive. Something like this, but I am not sure of the gauge, etc.:

For my whoopies, I cut a 36-inch piece and folded it in half. Works like a charm.
