sewing the end channel on a hammock

I'm making another hammock (#2) and I want to be able to run the suspension through the end channel. I have finished one side and I'm curious if y'all think it will be strong enough.

First I made a large 6" rolled hem then folded it over again to give me a 3" channel with double the fabric. I thought this would give it some extra strength.

My lines arnt very straight, but some spots almost look good so I'm happy.

But if it doesn't work I have enough fabric to chop it off and do the whipping. Y'all think this will hold?

On a side note the rip stop from DIY gear supply feels so much softer than joanns.

This is 1.1 oz with three lines of straight stitch. It's done me just fine for many a hangs. I think you should be good to go.

awesome. I guess I like a little overkill since I know who's making it

I double up the fabric like this as well. Only three rows of stitching though (and I'm guessing that's overkill). I doubt that your widely spaced zig zag stitching is adding much.

Strength comes from multiple stitches, sharing the load assuming you are not creating stress in the fabric. Lots of stitches X strength per stitch (which, conservatively is the strength of the thread, but in industry calculated at 70% more than that. One row of 3mm stitches (ie 8 stitches/inch) 50 inches long X 3lb/ stitch = 1200lb.....assuming all the stitches bear the weight.

BUT: If the thread is weak or weakens, then it can all fail, starting from the first broken stitches. Be sure your thread rows are locked up and strong at the ends.

Here's one guide to thread size and strength:

Unlike several in HF, I think there is nothing special about Gutterman thread. Thread makers around the world spin as good or better. What matters is picking the right ones and using them correctly.

I did the same doubling up of fabric on my end channels of my 1.1 oz hammock. I only did three straight line stitches. I have not had it long but it has survived me and my boys hanging in it. Even bounced on it a bit with two of my boys in it with me to stress test it and it shows absolutely NO signs of coming loose.

Most of the stress will come on the ends of the channels so just be sure you have some good back stitching to lock it all in place. I have no doubt you will be fine.

What you have should hold just fine. The zigzag is unnecessary IMO. Attached is a diagram of another way to do it.

I use this same method, except I fold 0.5" - I don't run a stitch here, just pin it - then fold again 1", pin again and then sew 3 rows of stitching all in the 3-layer overlap area. This gives me a 0.5" wide channel for the hammock suspension, which is more then enough.

I hem the long ends first, also.
