Just kind of curious question here. Does a wider hammock make up for not having a foot box?
Or is it something else altogether?
Thank you.

A wider hammock will allow for a diagonal lay without a footbox, and a footbox will allow for a better diagonal on a narrower hammock, but one does not necessarily replace the other. I like both, but they lay differently.
In trying to save weight a footbox on a narrow hammock reduces the overall material, on a full width hammock a footbox may make the lay that much more comfortable. In some cases the footbox may reduce or eliminate the calf ridge, or reduce pressure form hyper-extending the kness.
For me it's not really an either/or comparison, and I own several of each type. You would probably be well served to try some with and without a footbox to see what works best for you.

I haven't yet spent time in a narrow hammock with a footbox, so you could probably call my opinion worthless. However, I can say that my hammock is 6'4" wide with no footbox, and I have no issues with a comfortable diagonal lay.
