I'm 5'10", 175lbs and am a side sleeper that tosses and turns a bit. I have a HammockGear Burrow - 55", standard length. It's perfect for me. If you don't side sleep you could probably go down to the 50". If you go to the ground a lot, or are a bit heavier/wider than me, you might want to go up to the 60".

+1 on what breyman said or a Wilderness Logics regular will fit as well.

if you're getting a 3-season you'll want to go a little larger and the opposite for a summer because in the colder temps you'll want to be able to 'tuck' the tq under your shoulders and bum. I would recommend getting into your hammock and opening up a sleeping bag (3 season and summer weights) as if it were a tq. play around with tucking it behind shoulders and try to mimic the widths you're looking at.
if you have an uq that comes up high on you - above your shoulders then you may not need a really wide tq unless you want that double up.

I'm in the process of making a top quilt and have read a few threads on this in trying to figure out how wide to make one. What I've concluded is that most people, unless you really want to go ultralight and cut down on the weight, suggest a little bigger is better. I'd go for at least the 55" and if you like to side sleep, move around a lot etc maybe even the 60". You might even want to try taking blanket or sheet and pinning it up to the underquilt size and trying it out at home.

    That's a great idea.
