As long as you are not on the AT you can Hammock any where you want. Trust me when I say there is no shortage of trees in the Samkies. If you are on the AT you must stay at a shelter, and you must have reservations to stay on the AT unless you are a thru-hiker.

    The road to nowhere

Take the road to no where you can hike down to the lake at 2 or 3 different spots in that mileage, if I recall correctly. Camp close to Lake Fontana on the north side. You drive in from Bryson City.

There are several good spots out of Tremont/Elkmont. You might look at going up Little River Trail out of Elkmont and camping at CS 21 or CS 24 a bit further up. Several folks like going in from Abram's Campground and hiking up to CS 17 and then hiking on up to Abram's Falls without the crowds from Cades Cove. If you like wildflowers right now would be a great time to go up Porter's Creek out of Greenbrier up to CS 31. The great thing about the GSMNP is that there are tons of options. If you want to discuss more, drop me a PM. I was through Tellico Plains today on my way up to Indian Boundary for a quick stroll.

for car camping, check out Cades Cove. http://www.cadescove.net/auto_tour.html

They have a campground just outside the park entrance. I could spend a solid year exploring all the hiking trails and waterfall areas. I used to vacation there as a kid all the time. It is an awesome place.

not sure about the 3 to 4 mile trail though.

hope you find something that suits your needs.
