The last I read this thread Adam was off trail to get his ankle/foot looked after. I am sorry to now hear about Jenny's father. Prayers, good karma and peaceful thoughts sent to the Hursts.

Your dog is the only relative you choose...
Jen and Adam,
May the coming months be full of memories of Jen's father that make you laugh and sometimes cry.

Fin your description of thru hiking is exactly why I did the AT in sections.
The longest one was near 50 days and 700 miles. After that it was clear to me that a thru was possible physically, but the emotional part is harder than the physical. Many things going on in our lives do not stop happening because we are away from home.
I like about 30 days as a section, it lets you get fully into the hike and logistics of re-supply, and gather a "trail family" but does not go on so long that it becomes a burden.
Doing sections also allows you to see other trails when friends are going there during the year.
Hope to see you at TD and possibly Adam and Jenny also
