    gear stowage

    Hi everyone

I'm a new hanger, actually waiting on my wbbb and superfly now, but wanted to knwo what everyone does with all their gear. I don't want to get a gear hammock/sling so I'm thinking I'll just clip my pack to the hammock suspension lines by its carrying handle.

It's an Osprey Kestrel 58 and both Osprey and Warbonnet say this would work ok, but I'm curious to hear what everyone else does?

What about at night, what do you do with your shoes/boots, I'm guessing they just go under, and invert your socks over them if bugs/creepy crawleys are a concern?

Any other gotchas I should look out for?

    Thanks

    Dave

Hang my pack from a tree, and i carry a small tripod stool for sitting on mainly but it holds my boots at night...

I carry a short piece of paracord... It wraps around the tree and then pack hangs by a carabiner off of that... Shoes either get set on my camp chair next to hammock... Or laces get tied together and then thrown over hammock ridgeline... Anything else is either in pack, on me, or in ridgeline organizer...

I hang my pack and shoes both from the hammock ridgeline.

I take out my bag liner, dump everything inside and lay it below my hammock.

    awesome

    Great, thanks guys

Boots over the ridge line too? Never thought of that! that's work as long as the laces weren't wet when they get tied together

The more I think about this the more I hope I actually enjoy it, I never even thought of hammocking until a couple of the other leaders in my sons scout troop were talking about it.

Scrap of tyvek below the hammock for gear, shoes and anything else that gets strewn around. I eventually decided to get some tyvek tape and make one with a side walls like a tent with a bathtub floor. I like mine big enough for pack, shoes, and enough room to stand (for changing clothes and what not).

The gear hammock has always been enticing.

Actually, a gear hammock is much better. I have found that hanging anything up on the ridgeline or the straps causes a bit of a problem. If everything is on the ground you may have some problems. How about if good 'ol porky comes along? I have seen more than once on the AT where someone has awaken to boots that were chewed down to the soles by them.

I use a separate one nearby that i made myself with its own cover to keep the porcupines at bay and any other ground dwelling creatures out such as ants, slugs, mice, and even skunks. I have had one sniffing at my pack once and starting to try to chew at it to get in. It was easily shooed (and I never got sprayed). I made it out of an old piece of light nylon since it really does not have to hold much weight. Tie a knot on both ends and use a larks head to tie a rope to.

I bring a small piece of plastic for a groundsheet. Set my pack on that (or sometimes hang on a try where my tree straps go around it). Set my shoes on that as well and use it to stand up when needing to change, etc.
