Laying in the XLC question - help

I've been combing the other threads looking for what I'm facing but no dice so I have to ask.

I just got my XLC a week ago and finally got the chance to hang it and give it a test run. I've never hung in a BB before and being 6'1" I got the XLC to hopefully avoid the calf ridge and get a flatter lay like people have mentioned. I don't get a calf ridge so much as a knee ridge, and a big one. I've tried hanging it as per the xlc vid, tried level, pretty much tried everything I can think of so now I turn to you all for the voice of experience.

Am I just laying in it wrong? I can't find a sweet spot anywhere. I followed the instructions to the word and then spent hours trying to nestle in comfortably. I slept in it last two nights but wake up every couple hours and have to reposition to try and alleviate the discomfort in my knee.

I'm bummed because Brandon made me this amazing looking, left hanging hammock and I can't get comfy in it. Any suggestions are extremely appreciated. Thanks.

Hmmm... the main suggestions sound like what you've already tried, which are mainly to:
    - Hang the foot end 3-12" higher than the head end.
    - When laying in it, slide your head more toward the head end - adjust as needed.

I might also say make sure you experiment with how "diagonal" you lay. How close your head/shoulder is to the zipper can affect this. Many report needing to keep their shoulder pretty close to it.

Have you slept in other gathered-end hammocks before? What was your experience in them? Some just tend to have trouble in gathered-ends. If you try everything and just can't get comfy, it may be worth returning for a RidgeRunner...

Same things Brandon covered in the video worked for me.
    - foot end of the hammmock higher than the head end (see the video, you can see how much higher he has it)
    - sleep with your head closer to the head end of the hammock (in other words, don't smush your feet down in the foot box)
    - make sure you have the right angle on your suspension

    Good luck

    Thanks for the quick replies.

Breyman, I get the flattest lay with least ridge the closer I get to the zipper, but I can't go any further or I'd be laying on the netting. Also, I have tried every angle from level to about 18" higher on the foot end before bringing this too you all. I have layed in a friends gathered end a few years back with no trouble, but I held on to my tent until now to make the switch.

TallPaul, I had it set up multiple ways and checked the angles, they've been between 25-30 degrees. I also kept close to the head end.

I didn't have any trouble previously, just this one. Hopefully I can sort it out, other than this ridge it's fantastic.

I'll keep trying to figure it out. Any other ideas are welcome.

I actually find that a little less diagonal works better in my Blackbird compared to my Hennesy.

There are some that can't get rid of the calf ridge pressure. Many people pad the back of their legs with a fleece jacket or something else. I sometimes use my self inflating sit pad. I'm carrying it anyways so it's not an extra bit of gear I have to carry for only one purpose.

There was a thread regarding going to smaller hammocks for comfort as opposed to larger ones. After reading that thread I tried sleeping in my smaller hammocks and there is some merit to it although I connot explain why. Maybe a regurlar 10 foot Blackbird would suit you better?

How are the suspension angles and tension on your ridgeline? I have found this to be the most important part in my Blackbirds...

Noting all the previous poster's suggestions are all key, at that point it comes down to moving my butt around till I find the sweet spot in the hammock. Most generally I find myself too far away from the entry side.

For calf ridge, nothing has been as helpful as placing a rolled up garment under my knees.

I'mm a bit shorter; but I find getting trees that are more like 18' apart and having the ridge line pretty tight (along with what others have mentioned) nearly eliminates any calf/knee ridge.
