    18th century hammocks

    18th century hammocks

trying to find more information on if they where used in the 18th century, by who, and what materials where they made from ?
    any information is helpful

I am thinking that different militarily may have used them, as well as any ship travel across the oceans.

Original hammocks in Central and South American came from the Hammaka tree. Not too long and fiber such as from the Alpaca was used. By the 1700s hammocks had made it into Navies and shipping, probably cloth. Here is a link.

I think you will find that sailors used hammocks made from used or left over sail canvas. The reproductions I have seen used the many strings to a ring type end. Given some canvas work I have seen the strings may be part of the woven fabric. Pull out the cross threads and one gets longitudinal ones to tie to the rings. In the one ship I was on that had them they were hung from hooks on the bulkhead. No real suspension in our terms. If you can find some old bosun mate training or books on line you might find something there.
    YMMV

Seconding hammocks afloat, they could be rolled up, along with a sailor's possessions, and stashed along the gunwales of ships as protection from cannon ball caused splintersss. Used into the 1950's in the RN. All good, but I'm still trying to figure out how to use one to protect self from a bear...
