Long Huggers

I asked about this the Dutch Forum but I'm going to ask it again here in the hope of getting more responses.

I'm running a tree hugger larks-headed to a whoopie sling with a Dutch Hook which I hook to continuous loops on my hammock.

My new setup works well but I have discovered the hugger adds extra length to my suspension which can be undesirable. I fixed this by rotating the hugger around the tree so the point where the tree hugger passes through itself is not hanging straight at the hammock. This solved the extra length problem nicely.

Is there any reason not to do this?

If my question does not make sense let mr know and I will photograph or illustrate what I'm talking about. Thanks!

I don't see any problem with it... Unless the strap slides around the tree and you wake up on the ground... I think it is adding more stress on the strap but I don't think it's too much as long as you inspect your straps often...

Or, learn to tie the marlin spike hitch in your tree hugger (MSH). Tie it as close to the tree trunk as possible. Then use your whoopies for making adjustments. Most folks use a toggle for their MSH, but using a biner and clipping your whoopie onto that biner works nicely too. No need to larkshead your whoopies to your straps this way.

I've got 12' tree straps and 6' whoopies that I use with toggles and the MSH. There are many times where that amount of length has worked well for me, and times when it's waaaay too long.

As stated above, however, tying the hitch close to the tree and wrapping around the tree multiple times really eliminates that problem quite nicely.

I really enjoy using my dutch buckles. Simple adjustment so that you can easily shorten or lenghten the straps as needed.
