Trouble deciding which Dutch suspension to get

Suspension has way more choices than it used to. I for one like the tree hugger/Marlinspike/Whoopie suspension. But in Winter I switch to Straps and buckles. Many fing the sraps the easiest. The you have the choices of using a small biner or Dutch's ware....dutch clips, dutch biners et al.
And yes...many like whoopie hooks.
So no go-to suspension but tree straps or tree huggers are mandatory for us passionate hangers.

I'm using hammock anchor system with huggers. Instead of the toggle with Marlin spike I am using a multi buckle. I'm really loving the adjustability of this setup.

And just a quick mention.... If using toggles make sure your whoopie is secured around the knot and if you bounce around a lot check it once in a while. I had the whoopie "hop" off the toggle and drop me...... I'm constantly bouncing around in my hammock and like to swing myself to sleep though.

Having trouble totally picturing this. Are you using a Strap Anchor?

By a set of each, find the one that fits you. I'm sure Dutch won't mind.

I use straps so far in the field and Locked Links at home and when using a Turtledog stand.

I like having nothing more than CLs "permanently" attached to the hammock. From there I can choose a number of detachable suspensions.

For a strap suspension, I can't decide if the connection between the strap and the CL is better with a Strap Anchor or a Cinch Bug (or something else...)

I'm not a fan of the WS but here's what I see as two of the more popular set-ups:

1) Fixed eye of WS larksheaded to hammock and the adjustable loop hung over something on the strap. That something can be a MSH or a hardware substitute for a MSH.

2) Fixed eye of WS larksheaded to a sewn eye on a strap and a Whoopie Hook connecting the adjustable loop to a CL on the hammock.


I'm intrigued by the pursuit of having a single lead of line larksheaded to the strap. I'm not sure anyone has come up with the perfect solution to making the connection from the lead to the CL yet (IMO), but I think a couple of pretty good ideas are getting really close.


Several options for attaching the strap to the tree. The simplest (in design) is passing the business end of the strap through a sewn loop on the other end. Many choose to make the connection with some device instead to simplify the process. That "device" may be hardware (such as a Dutch Clip, MultiBuckle, or similar) or a soft version made from Amsteel or similar, e.g. a soft shackle.

My suspension choice is similar to Shug's. I use straps + marlinspike + UCR except in the winter when I switch to Cinch Bugs.

if you're open to other options, i would check out some of the bits from the bias website (http://www.buttinasling.com/suspension.html). i have the strap anchor and love it. i also found dutch's spider hardware is shaped very similarly to the strap anchor, so it can be used that way as well. there are so many options out there, sometimes the only way to know what works for you is to actually use it.

I just upgraded my cheapo hammock's suspension. For a a whopping 20 bucks I was able to pick up 25' webbing, 25' of amsteel, and cinch buckles. I made two 8" continuous loops from the amsteel and used the rest for an overkill of a ridge line.
