From UQ back to a pad? Has this ever happened?

Just curious as I plan to buy my first underquilt in June whether anyone has ever bought an UQ and then decided to go back to pads. If so, why?

Forgive me if this topic has been covered. It probably has but I ran a search and didn't find any results. Perhaps I wasn't using the right word string.

Personally, I will never go back to using a pad! An UQ is the best thing I have ever bought for my hammock setup! Maddog

The only reason I can think of for reverting back to a pad is if you're a hiker who's found himself in a place devoid of anything to hang from so has to set everything up for sleeping on the ground.

An underquilt would compress to the point of being nearly useless and a closed-cell foam pad, or other substitute, would be the best recourse in this case.

From UQ back to a pad? Has this ever happened?

Actually yes, well kinda. I've had a 40 degree underquilt for a while. It's my go to for most of the year. In the winter I was supplementing it by adding a pad. This setup works really well for me. So last year I decided to buy a new 0 degree uq and not use the pad. I don't know what's going on but I just can't stay warm in it even on 20 degree nights. Also, it is so much larger packed that it takes up almost all my pack space (I just strap the pad to the outside). Needless to say I'll be selling it and going back to my old setup.

Yes and no. I have dedicated quilts for hanging. This year I plan on doing varying terrain trips where some places will have trees and other places will not. I'm developing a system where I will use a pad instead of an Underquilt in my hammock so I can transition to ground in places when there are no trees. I will use my tent as a tarp when hanging as well. So I have gone back to pads in a way.

I plan to keep my pads for ground camping or for lending friends who want to try hammocks.

Sounds like so far nobody has totally gone back to pads after using an UQ.

I was a UQ user in a gathered end hammock. Went pad with the bridge. Thought about getting a UQ for it when I was having issues with my inflatable pad but once resolved I've got no intentions of buying a UQ now.. for a bridge. In a gathered end, I'd go UQ all day. I like the shape the pad offers my bridge however, it's just a remarkably comfortable get'up.

I've been wondering this same thing. I have a 20* incubator and a DIY under quilt, but when I bought my ridge runner, it seems like a pad might be a better option. Do you like the pad better than the quilt for your bridge?

To be fair, I've never used a UQ with my bridge. That being said, just using it without the pad I notice a difference in comfort. With my pad, it really feels like a floating bed. I was sleeping sideways fetal, on my stomache, you name it. Without the pad I find it a little more difficult and I'd have to put a little more time in to "tuning" the hammock vs the pad it's a "close enough" and perfect lay everytime. Just my experiences though.
