Wow, that is so cool. I'm gonna make it a point to get up that way and check it out sometime this year. I've done all of MD several times on the AT, so now I'm branching out into VA and PA.

I love solos for a little 'recharge.' I get home and everyone acts like I need rest to recover, they don't understand that recovery is exactly what I go for!

Hey Doogie, it was nice hangin' with ya in the Canadian section of the MAHHA last weekend. That's one nice looking shelter! Hopefully my knee will be fully healed by next one and I can do that hike in.

It was nice hanging with you too. I wouldn't recommend south bound out of the Quarry Gap shelter with a bum knee due to the fairly steep and long decent (I'm not sure of the exact amount, but around 500 feet of elevation change), but the rest of the way there were no tough climbs or descents.

Ok, now that I'm thinking about jazz/fusion drummers I think I'll listen to a little Gadd....as a drummer friend of mine used to say "Gadd is god"
"Mountains should be climbed with as little effort as possible and without desire. ... To live only for some future goal is shallow. It’s the sides of the mountain that sustain life, not the top. Here's where things grow." - Robert M. Pirsig

Several years ago on a winter trip a few of us stayed at the Quarry Gap shelter. We had passed Jim Stauch on the way up from Caledonia. He had done his typical checkout of the shelter and was returning home. He told us about a young fellow who was "living" at the shelter and he finally told him to get moving, north or south he didn't care, but get out of his shelter.

That night we were jolted awake by the sound of a scream, shriek, cry all in one. It sounded awful! We remembered Jim's story and figured the young fellow came back to scare us out so he could have the shelter. We decided to grab flashlights and run up the hill and catch him. No luck, didn't see anything.

Heading back down the trail to Caledonia we again ran into Jim Stauch. We told him our story and he begins laughing and says....

"I see you had an encounter with the resident Bobcat!" Wow! I'll never forget that shrill scream...who would have figured it was a Bobcat. It was probably good we didn't find him.

I think if a bobcat wanted to scare me out of a shelter I would have to oblige. Good story!
