Lightbulb NJ > Pine Barrens - Which New Sites Are Suitable for Hanging

Now that the NJ Pine Barrens have decided to move to their new reservation system, and divide all the previously freeform wilderness camps into defined sites - it's going to be difficult for a little while to know which sites have enough trees to hang. And especially which sites have enough trees for multiple people to hang.

Since SilvrSurfr and I hung at Lower Forge this past weekend, by the time we left on Sunday no one else was around - so we took stock of which sites were best. I figured I'd start a thread where we can let everyone know which sites are good, and which sites just won't work, as we have a chance to check them out.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to reply, and make the title of your reply the name of the campground. Let's give it a try, shall we?

Mods, if this isn't the best place to put this, please feel free to move

Well, for Lower Forge, we know that 4, 5 & 6 are okay for hammock camping and seven is marginal. Is that your understanding?

    Lower Forge

    Stayed at Lower Forge 4-27-13

Sites 1, 2, and 3 are wide open group sites. Site 1 is closer to the latrine, 2 is right in the middle of the open area, and three is over closer to the water. No real trees at any of them to speak of. You might be able to scrape together enough trees to hang by yourself ... but I wouldn't even count on that.

Site 4 and 5 are the best options. Plenty of trees at each for multiple people. I don't know which I'd say was better of the two - but either one would be fine. And if you're going with a group of people, get them both if you can, and you'll have your pick of the best hanging Lower Forge has to offer.

Site 6 and 7 both have a few options. We stayed at site 7 and if the guys we met that were staying at 6 (who also coincidentally had a hammock) hadn't offered to let us set up a little bit into their site, we wouldn't have really had enough trees for the three of us. Site 6 has one good set of trees, site 7 has two decent sets of trees (though make sure you don't have really short whoopies) and there's a pair of trees that sort of span the two sites.

Sites 8 and 9 are again more open, and lacking in trees. You might be able to find somewhere to hang here - though you'd have to be edging into the woods a bit. Not really and pairs of trees of the right distance in the sites themselves.

So to sum up, sites 4-7 are hammock friendly. But aim for 4 and 5 if you can.

Excellent thread. Subscribed. I wish I had paid more attention when I was there. But it looked like Batona had plenty of trees.

    Batona Camp

Campsite 10 with trees for hanging. Theres a set of trees that can handle smaller straps but its a bit tight. I hung from perfect sized trees approximately 15 feet apart. There were more. Again, next time I will be more aware and take mental notes for us.

I wouldn't worry too much. Batona Camp is pretty well stocked with trees at most of the sites. If I remember correctly even the group site has at least one set of trees.

But we'll take a look next time anyone stays there. Maybe we can even get pictures

Was thinking of doing this trip in the summer, when I can go during the week (less crowds, more bugs!) any ideas for taxis or shuttles to get back to my car? Or do any of you jersey devils know of good loop hikes in the Batona area??
