If you use trekking poles, you can use those as spreader bars. This is what my son and I do. We even hang from the same tree straps using Dutch's buckles.

I actually made a set of spreader bars this last weekend. I took a 8 ft 2x2 and cut it in half. I then cut a groove in each end to allow the suspension to slide in. This turned out to be too far apart as it would allow one hammock to jump into the air if both were not loaded. SO I cut them down to 3ft and it worked great. Had the kids on either side of the bars with the wife hanging under in the center. Three hammocks under one tarp.

There you are.

Basically on mine there is a basket made of 3/8 wide grosgrain for the handle of a trekking pole and another basket made to slide the tip of the trekking pole into.
Each basket is put onto the suspension system near the hammock, 2 sets required.
Trekking poles are used in the shortened setting, about 24 inches. suspension lines for both hammocks are near the center of the trees but could be moved to the outside of the tree for less force.
Hammocks should be close to the same length to eliminate the bars sliding up and away from the hammock.
You can feel the other person move some when they get out but it does not bother either of us much.

I think this is what I am going to try initially and to experiment. That must be pretty amazing having all three under one tarp and must be very nice for the wife and kids to be so close at night.
This is a great idea!
Ditto!

It's a bit high priced, but have you checked out the Clark Vertex hammock? I got one for my husband and I and he wants to hang more since we got it. It is one sweeeettt hammock.

When I go hammocking with my DH we have two tree near eachother then connect the tarps above us so that we are in a big 'tent'. Its works really well with two superflys but we've done it with a superfly and a Hennessy Hex too. If you look up Nighthauk's anniversary video I know the set up is in there.
PS we still do a car camping set up with the tent so we still get cuddle time.
Here's the video of our trip. Start at 8:00 if you want to see the set up.
