    Refletix type material

I'm sure this has been discussed and I am missing it some where but I'll ask anyway. I work in shipping and recieving and we get boxes in that have a refletix type material inside them. I am curious if anyone has tried a refletix sleep pad? I would have to piece one together out of this material but for budget and weight I'm thinking it might be better than my army surplus sleep pad. Thoughts or ideas?

Yes. It will work. Care must be taken lest you create condensation under yourself (wet bed). A large dash protector, made of similar material, is inexpensive and easily available, and in one piece. It has been discussed at length here on the forums, so a search should find plenty of insight.

One more, as a source of material for making cozies for cups and pots, you for sure may have hit the jackpot.

People use reflectix as a pad with some success, but it is important to understand that it is designed to work best with a dead air space on one side. Used as a pad, or a cozie, it is certainly better than nothing, but will not outperform ccf, imo.

For that to be effective, you will have to have a good seal all around the perimeter. Given the relative stiffness, that may be problematic.

Go ahead and use it as a supplement to the USGI sleep pad, but not a replacement.

Well, what if I were to put it in a sleeve that would seal up around the hammock. It would reflect the body heat back to you wouldn't it? Not trying to be a smarty just thinking out loud.

Way to be on the lookout for DIY materials. There are better options for a sleeping pad, but it will work. It is a backup/supplement pad for me. Check out http://www.backwoodsdaydreamer.com/d...ex-underquilt/ Note how the three layers are progressively narrower towards the inside. This method creates dead air space. You could certainly use a layer of reflectix as an inner layer in this type of quilt design. If it were me designing such a creature, I'd use a smaller piece of the reflectix located in the center of the quilt, as a layer just at the body's core. The rest of the quilt shell could seal against the hammock, as OG rightly noted it should.

You can also make cozies and sit pads of all types.

I just used a 6ft length of it in the double layer underneath my hammock in 40 degree weather and it worked great. I used the black bag from my Military Sleep System and was cozy and warm all night.

You might want to consider using a binder clip to secure it, though. Mine Reflectex pad slid out of place a few times before I secured it like that.

If you have a single layer hammock, you can place binder clips on each corner and use bungee or shock cord to attach it to your hammock.
