When to underquilt

I apologize if this has been discussed, but there is a ton of information and I can't find it here.

Anyway, at what temperature do you need an underquilt. We were out this weekend and it got down to the low 50's, high 40's at night. I used an old sleeping bag as an underquilt and I think I might not have need it at all.

It's personal. I need an underquilt under 70*.

68-70℉ for me... I may be able to do 65℉ but wouldn't be warm, just be able to sleep tolerably...

I would agree that if the overnight temps get below 70 I use a quilt.

i always bring my tewa breeze underquilt on summer trips, it can get chilly in them hills at night. i like to go as light as possible, but when it comes to my underquilt id rather have it and not need it then not have it at all. 10 oz is a small price to be comfortable.

when I first herd that you need 1 under 65 I thought no way! but ya know the people that said that are right indeed. for me I would use my quilt with any temp below 70 at night just because it wont over heat me, I think you could use 1 in the 75-80 range and not be to hot but it wouldnt be necessary. my quilt is only rated to 30 though so if you have a zero or so rating you might be to hot at 55??

now that being said... i don't need a top quilt until 60* or so...

We are going to be making under quilts from Army ponchos, so the weight will be minimal.

We'll be using ponch "liners", not ponchos

I used my ccf this time and while it was warm it definitely slipped (even between the layers) and I ended up with cold spots. I think the poncho liners will do it for us in the summer and late spring and early fall, but after that we'll need something a bit thicker.

It hardy ever gets warm enough here in PA to go without for a night.
