First Hang - Ends on ground

Finally we have Spring here, so on my weekend Motorcycle tune up tech get together, I brought my new DIY (Tablecloth) hammock. This was my first hang and I broke the cardinal rule - I didn't try everything out first (too cold and rainy).

Put up the ENO prostraps, hooked up the whoopies at both ends with my toggles and adjusted the whoopies so I got my 30 degree angle (as measured with my hand and thumb), and then left to continue working on my bike with the others.

That night, I went to hammock, and found myself slowly sink near the ground, I was still above it, so went to sleep. about 3 hours later, I woke to find I was definitely on the ground - at least my butt.

As a bonus, I also ended up on a sharp stick (hidden beneath the pine needles and grass) which went through the hammock, REI emergency blanket, and my Wal-Mart pad!

So I obviously missed something. Was I supposed to tie 2 half hitches somewhere on the whoopies?

Can I repair the puncture with tent repair tape?

Not my best first experience to be sure! I'd sure like to know what went wrong. Whoopies seem to be fine, just not sure what I did wrong.

Taking it that the ENO pro-straps were used as tree hugger. Heard they stretch a bit. Maybe the whoopies were on backwards......also remember to milk your buries (see video below at 5:50) You need not tie half-hitch on a whoopie sling.
They do sell pad patch kits. http://www.rei.com/product/729817/re...pad-repair-kit

I bet it was the pro straps. You have to "hang 'em high" and I had the same problem when I first got them. Maybe someone else has more advice, but I have to say that I had that happen as well. As far as repairs, there is some tape you might use, but I consider it to be dangerous if the hole starts to spread. I see Shug answered and I respect his answer, but it still had to be the pro straps. if you did it right you still did not have to worry about the understory. Hey, maybe the hammock can be used as a slingshot with these.

It was the first use of the ENOs as tree huggers, mabe I should have wrapped them twice.

Whoopies are on correctly, but I didn't milk my buries!

I have some tenacious tape I bought for tent repairs, I'll try taping both sides of the holes. It's a fairly small hole - about 1/4", so If I put a nice 2" Square over both sides, I think I may get away with it!

I didn't think to sweep aside the needles to look for sharp objects - was trying to find pines without widow makers!

    Thanks!

Sorry to hear your were let down!

The whoopees were not the culprit. Your eno straps stretched. It doesn't take much... if you need good straps, I have extra 1" polyester straps... pay shipping and they're yours.

I agree with these guys, I'd be willing to bet it was the pro-straps! Nylon webbing tends to stretch quite a bit during use. For my straps I bought some NRS 1" loop straps made of the polypropylene webbing.
I may be dumb, but at least I'm ugly!

I've done so much, with so little, for so long, now I can do anything with nothing.

It's not peer pressure, it's just your turn.

always use poly, stay away from nylon. Just like your silnylon tarp will sag after being pitched taught, your nylon straps stretched when all of your body's weight was put on them.

As far as repairing the hammock, I dunno but I'd get piece of mind and just spend another 5.00 and whip a new one.

I've never had any issues with my ENO atlas straps - they must be a different material than the other ENO straps. At the time I was using them I was 270 lbs, and I had no overnight stretch. I've since switched to whoopies and my wife uses the straps for their simplicity.

Atlas Straps are different material. They work!
Slap Straps and Slap Strap Pro are stretchy.
