    Hello from tropical Singapore

    Hi All!

Greetings from Singapore! Thought I should introduce myself since i've just pulled the trigger on my first hammock, an XLC blackbird double 1.1 with the adjustable straps and a superfly.

I will surely have many questions as this will be my first serious attempt at more outdoor-sy stuff but I've always been interested. My main area of concern is the hot and humid weather here. Average temp is about 32 deg C during the day and 28 deg C at night, humidity averages out at about 75% unless it rains which then pushes it up to 80% plus. Bugs are always a concern here so I'll have to look into getting some permethrin or something.

Setting up the tarp is also a concern for me. I plan to follow the tarp setup video on the warbonnet site and have bought the 100 foot roll of 1.75 line along with the hammock. The problem is I have no idea how make the fixed loops that I see in the video to attach it to the tarps and the tutorials I've seen are rather daunting.

Nonetheless, I see this all as a personal challenge and am looking forward to learning many things from the more experienced members here. Also, if there's any other Singaporeans here, I'm up for some sort of hang together to learn the ropes so please let me know. Thanks guys!

p.s.: any tips on how to convince the lady of the house that $400 worth of camping equipment is a worthy investment?

Welcome from India. I'm working on putting my first kit together as well, the bug problem has kept me from actually spending the night in my hammock but I'm in it whenever I have a free moment at home. I have a similar heat problem (supposed to be 43C today (110+F) I'm looking into just a silk Over quilt to help with the perspiration. Silk is pretty accessible and cheap here in India and is nice and light, I'm even playing with the idea of trying a syl-silk tarp. Plenty of great information here, I don't post a ton because almost all my questions are already answered!

    Hello from tropical Singapore

    Welcome from Florida.
The loops you refer to are spliced loops. There are plenty of threads here on the forums, as well as YouTube, showing how to splice. It's pretty easy after you do the first one. You will need only some fairly fine wire and a knife.

Your hammock is made of silk? Is silk strong enough to support your weight?

Yeah I've seen most of the tutorials I think but I'm still afraid I'll screw it up and waste some of the lines. On a related note, how do finish the end of the line with no loop so it doesn't fray? Melt it with a lighter? I bought 1.75 dyneemas.

I don't think you really need to melt dyneema, if you tuck it into itself you should be fine. I get my amsteel shipped from the states, so I know how precious it can be but making a small practice peace should calm your nerves, it isn't as hard as it looks.

Silk is super strong stuff and others have made hammocks with them but mine is polyester crepe. The silk is for the over-quilt (more of just a blanket really) to help spread my perspiration and cool me off.

I'll be honest here, I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that but I'm sure I'll find out soon enough as I lurk more

Yeah, I guess that's a little vague The proper term for that is the "bury" but watching the videos on the site are what I found most helpful. Good luck!
