DYMAX™ 12 strand?

Is it ok to use DYMAX™ 12 strand to make a Whoopie Sling since I can't find Amsteel locally? Thanks

It's made from the same stuff as Amsteel Blue and Dyneema, and the specs are definitely strong enough so I see no reason why you shouldn't use the 3/16" stuff, unless it's scary expensive.

Otherwise, just order from Redden Marine (one of the vendors here on the site) and type "hammockforums" into the coupon code and they will take good care of you.

3/16" diameter is bigger than most people use. The extra bulk may bother you more than the weight.

Looks like there is a West Marine a couple miles from you. They may not have the size and color of Amsteel you want in stock but can order it in for you. They will price match online retailers like Redden. I also got some Lash-it from them. The price match they did was about half of their retail.

Pay attention to Mousekowitz's last sentence.

All Dyneema is not the same and all cordage is not laid up to maximize strength. I haven't heard of SK65. Maybe that's what is in Amsteel, but going from memory Amsteel Blue and similar are SK75. The Dyneema fiber numbers go up to 90, last I looked.

For example, Samson's SK78 that weighs 1.0 lb per 100ft has a BS of 5400lb, 50% more than the Dymax (tm). So, you see there is a difference, though you hardly need to care.

Correction, maybe: I'm not finding Amsteel (without Blue). Maybe Samson has dropped it. And your Dymax has the same BS for 1lb / 100ft as Amsteel Blue.

To get price matching:

What I have done is to print a recent mock order to Redden Marine of Samson cordage of difference sizes, -- last step before sending the order ---including the 5% discount to HF members. I take that with me to the local West Marine, without insisting on the last 5% difference. It encourages the associate to take the trouble to confirm the lower price,but most West Marine stores enable associates to go to the internet at the check-out point.

Well, they only had 1/4" DYMAX but I found some 3/16" Spectra to play around with. Appears to have the same tensile strength as the DYMAX. The bulk really shouldn't be an issue for me.

As I recall spectra is a different base material. The attractions of amsteel blue are the 12 strand braid lends itself to splicing for whoopie slings as well as it's strength so it is construction as well as material.

Redden will work with you to ship reasonable amounts at cheap as they can if you contact them. The shipping on the calculator is high.

"Plasma, Spectra, Dyneema and Amsteel are HMPE, High-modulus polyethylene fibers produced by gel-spinning ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)." That's not saying they are all the same...just similar.

As long as the weight rating is sufficient and the spectra has single/hollow braid construction, you should be able to use it for whoopie slings.

There's also nothing wrong with hollow cordage made of Vectran(tm). Different synth fiber altogether.

Yes, I know Griz' had a problem....once..... as reported here, but that was when he was younger and less experienced.
