    Big Guy Hammocking

Hey guys, I'm new to the world of hammocking and, like most newbies, I could use some advice.

I have an ENO Doublenest that shows great potential. I'm 6'2", 260 pounds and it fits very well.

My question involves suspension. I went to my local shop and bought a set of Atlas straps. Before using them, I found the Kammok Python straps online and purchased them to compare them.

The Atlas straps are better via the eye test. They fold up nicely and the bag has plenty of space for them. They are also a little thicker and the loops are nicer. Problem - Weight limit is 200 lbs. each.

The Pythons are a little longer and are supposed to hold 250 lbs each. The problem - they don't roll up nicely. You just kinda have to wad them up and stuff them in the bag.

My first setup was just using 550 paracord to test out the hammock, but the paracord snapped on me. That's made me wary of my system because I'm a heavier guy.

What do you prefer, Atlas or Python? And feel free to pass along any other advice for big boys.

    Thanks

If you are going to use straps... I love the ones I got from warbonnet outdoors on my eno. 300 pounds.... solid as a rock. They even fit in the stuff sack with the hammock and their biners.

Most of the cottage vendors are offering webbing with a 1200# rating.
    Try some of that.

Avoid nylon for your straps. It stretches.

1200 lb straps often have "working load" of about 400 lbs, which is plenty.

I have used the Atlas straps a lot and weigh 300 currently, no worries.

Currently using 7/64 amsteel whoopies with smc rings and straps from tractor supply.
    $15 whoopies
    $12 smc descending rings
    $10 straps from tractor supply

Wow, Thanks for all the fast responses guys. I'm excited about getting into hammocks, pun intended.

I ordered an Amsteel ridgeline from Ebay and I'm hoping that'll help me relax better instead of worrying if my hammock will collapse ha. Here's the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Amsteel-Hamm...-/271177295432

I wouldn't see the weight limit of the Atlas straps as a problem. 400 Lbs total combined capacity.

I've only used my Atlas straps a couple of times as I'm a hammock newbie myself but they work great for me. Zero stretch and very easy setup.

I am a little heavier than you and still using the slap straps from a couple years ago. Haven't had any problems with weight limit, but they do stretch if you pick trees that are very far apart.

This is entirely a matter of prefference there is certainly more than 1way to hang a hammock and multitude of wrong ways. After messing around with a couple different types of suspension I've settle with the all-in-one system from whoopieslings.com I have them on all my hammocks and personally consider it the best way to hang a hammock. BTW: I'm heavier than you and I've probably trusted my life with this suspension on a few occassion, no worries.
