Someone linked to a post about backpacking with kids, some good info in there. My son weighs about 60 pounds, so I try to have him carry no more than 15 pounds, closer to 10 pounds if we can. He carries: sleeping bag, hammock, tarp, mini bocce ball set (which is AWESOME), camping pillow, survival kit, cook kit, water, and a few small things like headlamp, granola bar, etc...
WOW, what a wonderful place to be. Too cool to have little one want more. My 3 are waiting for their kits to go as well.

Looks like he (and you) had a really great time. I am just getting back into backpacking and my oldest son is now 6. Looking forward to getting him out into the woods this summer.
