    Tie out reinforcement fabric question

I'm constructing a hex cat tarp out of grey 1.2 silnylon. I plan on using sil tie outs but don't know the best plan for reinforcement fabric. I have some heavier Joannes green ripstop (1.9?), 1.5 black sil, and some fecal colored non-ripstop that was from Wal-Mart.

I'm really doubt I am using the brown but it was 1.50 a yard and it would be decent for prototyping. I know sil is stronger than its weight equivalent in ripstop nylon but I don't know the best course of action.

    Thanks ahead.

I don't see how adding silicone to nylon would change it's strength.

With that said, using any of the materials you list for reinforcing patches should be fine. I do suggest using grosgrain for the tie outs instead of silnylon.

    Tie out reinforcement fabric question

I have always seam sealed my tieouts in the hopes that it reinforced them somewhat, but that's based on absolutely nothing but my opinion.

I was basing using sil for the tieouts on this thread. It is an interesting read. http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-...hread_id=33549

    fecal colored
    I don't want to know.

I just used some scrap rip stop for reinforcement on a Gear Guide tarp I modded so I could hang it as the traditional Diamond shape or now as a rectangular shape.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

I can post a pic of the color of the fabric but I won't post my reference point.

Another way to look at it...if the tarp and tie out are somehow stressed to failure, would you rather have the tie out fail or the tarp?

    Tie out reinforcement fabric question

The body is weakest, the rolled or grosgrain hem is stronger and the triangle fabric reinforcement tied into the hem is strongest. As long as the stretch of the fabrics are similar, strength isn't that important. Bottom line is go with the color you want to see on the tarp.

I used a scrap of black oxford nylon in conjunction with the SilNylon I made the body from. You can barely see through from the outside.

    Here's a pic
