    Hammocking AT Thru Hike

Is there anyone out there that has hammmocked the AT that can tell me whether the hammock starts to stink after while? Is there any method you can suggest to prevent this. I would not want to smell the hammock every time I go to sleep. Maybe I would smell my on body odor over the hammock but I would try to stay as clean as I could.

I would believe others might be able to smell it but I used the same hammock the whole way and I never noticed any smell. I usually wore sleeping clothes to bed and washed in streams regularly. My beard smelled bad though.

Thanks you Kayak Karl & Dutch for the intelligent response. Now I have some idea what it would be like from someone who has been there. When you dream about the AT but know nothing about it it helps to ask others who know. I intend to move from this rock in the middle of the ocean and complete a thru hike of the AT.

Hiker stink is real, but not mandatory. Rinse off at the end of the day. Wear sleeping clothes to protect your hammock, quilt, sleeping bag.

I thru'ed on '09 and still use all of my gear. No funk.

I do remember hikers that you could smell coming, and seeing others crawl into their bag at night with legs covered in mud. Can only imagine what their bag looked and smelled like when they finished.

Dude, I never thru hiked the AT but I used to be a paratrooper, based in Alaska, did a LOT of ...umm...let's call it "hiking" there and I hiked a lot of the AT and its side trails, in Virginia, when I got back. Before something happened to prevent me from hiking anymore.
For what it is worth, I always made sure to change clothes when I got a chance to sleep, barring a "tactical situation" not allowing it, which you do not have to worry about. I also made sure to always clean up, before going to sleep, and I mean a good, thorough clean up. I do not care what some folks would have you believe, being "in the field" is no excuse for being totally funky. Change your undewear, change your socks, wash your dirty clothes even if it just hand rinsing them with some "green" cleaner, and wash yourself at least once a day. Clean and or powder your feet several times a day, they are going to get you where you are going. Make sure you powder your shoes or boots at night and let them dry good. I usually sleep with mine in the bottom of my bag. I go through foot powder like mad.
A lesson I learned early on, during two and three month...ahem..."excercises"...we won't say where or when...Keep yourself and your equipment as clean as possible. You will feel better and you will perform better.
If you are clean, and wearing clean clothes when you climb into your hammock, it should stay fairly clean. You still might want to take one day a week to rinse it off, wipe it down and dry it good. That is what I always tried to do with my bag. Well, Not, "rinse" excatly...run a wet rag over it and air it out.
    good luck.

This might not always work, but you can treat the hammy like a tent or clothing. You can wash it in a river or lake, but make sure that it will dry or you'll have a wet bed. If you go to town you can stick it in a machine with a little soap. Be careful if you use a dryer since it should be set on the lowest level.
