my wife had a fleece processed into rolled batts. My experience with it was it compresses very nicely into hard nasty little clumps that stay that way for the rest of eternity. Wool yarn and thread is already compressed into controlled matts which is why wool cloth does not compress any more. Once the thread or yarn is spun it is very stable and doesn't change much, at least until it is felted. Warmth to the nth degree with that stuff. But just plain wool batts would concern me. But hey... try it...
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Ha! Good idea, Gargoyle! Now I have images of a flock-drawn sled and all my gear on it!!

Thanks for your thoughts guys, the weight issue is a good point.

I think I can feel an experiment on the sewing machine coming on!! I found two large bags of fleece tucked away in a wardrobe last night, just weighed it and it comes in at 2.4KG! I think that'll be enough to do the job a few times over!

I'll set up a new thread once I have something to show for it.

Good point, I hadn't thought of felting it... That could be interesting! It's probably possible to make a felted UQ without the need for any silnylon or cover material like that at all... To the drawing board!

Nope. The poncho liners are a polyester batting (similar to what you'd find at a regular big box fabric store like JoAnn) sandwiched between two layers of 1.9 oz/sq yd nylon with a light DWR applied. They're sewn-through to stabilize the batting, which is one of the reasons that they're so durable (the other being the weight of the shell fabric).

I'd be interested to see what you come up with, as far as the wool goes. Perhaps making the blanket multi-use (as a cape or serape, as wool can be felted to be pretty much waterproof) would help to alleviate the weight and bulk issues? For your climate, it might be a better choice than down--seeing as how down tends to collapse if you get it wet.

Anyway, looking forward to what you come up with!
