    Bed replacement hammock

    Hi there,

I have been toying with the idea of replacing my bed with a hammock/hammock stand set up. Would love to hear suggestions, as well as any comments recommending or discouraging such an idea. One of the main reasons I like this idea is that I would have the ability to pack up my "bed" in a small bag vs tying to it the roof of a car, or using a trailer to transport it when I move (from university to home)

Right now I am looking at these hammocks:

    http://www.hammocks.com/hammock-pack...tablestand.cfm

    http://www.hammockuniverse.com/colle...niversal-stand

    http://www.hammocks.com/hammock-pack...ablestand1.cfm

I could save quite a bit by avoiding the stand and buying some stuff at a local hardware store to hang it up. So any comments regarding that would be greatly appreciated (space requirements, length, hanging height, etc).

I'm very partial to the Brazilians and the bottom link is a good one. Very similar to what I sleep in every night.

Been sleeping in a tablecloth hammock myself for the better part of two and a half years. 90x132, very comfortable. Then again, I've not been in a Brazilian yet and cannibal is much more experienced then me. But my hammock and suspensions goes into a canteloupe sized bag.

Question on this. I've spoken with a couple of folks that have been using the TC hammocks at home for a while. Both have stated that the hammocks have stretched into a permanent shape which they say is making some sleeping positions less comfortable. Neither had been flipping the hammocks with any regularity. I'm wondering, are you a flipper? Have you noticed any perma-stretch in the fabric? I haven't sipped the tablecloth KoolAid, so consider this an honestly ignorant inquiry.

Well, mine will fit into a watermelon-sized bag. Not one of those stupid little seedless numbers either, but a real watermelon.

We went to fulltime hammocking the beginning of this week, when the second of 2 tablecloth hammocks was installed. Duffy did the wall-mount system in such a way that it looks like furniture, and is useful as a shelf for my books and Kindle. Haven't finished rearranging, but sure am sleeping well!

    Cannibal,

How far apart are your mounts with such a large hammock? These ones are 14 ft in length.

Around 12'. I'm sure I've posted the span before, but I don't remember off the top of my head.

The only real problem I see with switching from a bed to a hammock is, what if you want someone to stay the night with you? In my experience two people even in a double layer is only comfortable for a short period of time.

Well, in our case, we each have our own hammock for the nights we don't want to hyper-cuddle in a hammock together. I understand that doesn't work as well for...uhhh....friends spending the night. Although I'm tempted to ask why you would be sleeping in that situation, I'll save that question for a campfire at a Hang.

I suppose the easy answer is to do what we have in our bedroom at home: a futon. It is technically the dog's futon, but it does occasionally get used by the ones that buy that fat dog its food. The nice thing about a futon is that it folds-up when not in use as a sleeping platform, so it is really just a place to sit in the bedroom until needed. That format would give you most of the best of both worlds.
