Generally trail conditions are excellent. The bug population is largely gone by then. Depending on rainfall over the summer, some of the small creeks used for water sources may be dry or very low, though there are almost always good sources of drinking/cooking water available.

I am also planning on hiking the SHT this fall. Any advise on the best month to go to view the color change in the trees? All the images on the web that I have viewed look gorgeous of that time of year.

I think the first or second week in October is usually the peak for fall color. Fall is a beautiful time up there!

My wife and I have been going up for a week (or more) for 25+ years. The last week of September/first week of October is more or less the peak fall color period. There is color in abundance before then...and after...but peak is around that time, though it varies based on tree species (aspen/poplar/birch is early, maples and oaks are a bit slower to change) and whether you're on the northern (color is earlier) or southern (color is later) portions of the SHT.

Mid August-Late September is a great time to do a trip. With the late spring this year the water situation should be better. I wouldn't count on small creeks or ponds that usually dry up for water. If you go post Labor Day many of the crowds should be gone.

Late September-Mid October would be the best time to shoot for the falls colors. Late September most of the trail should be starting to changes colors and 1st two weeks in October everything should be beautiful on the whole trail. The farther north you go the colors could be changing by mid-September.
