Spray adhesive for tarp reinforcement patches

I just finished putting 12 reinforcement patches on a tarp. Holding them in the correction location can be a task.
So I got into some of my wife's sewing stuff and found a great help. She does a lot of embroidery sewing and needs to hold fabric in position. She has some Textile Spray Adhesive that she uses. Actually she has about four or five kinds. The can says "Won't Gum Up Needles!"
I used it to spray on the reinforcement patch and then place it on the tarp fabric. I just sprayed it on the patch and not on the tarp material. I did not want any overspray on the tarp.
It would hold the patches in position so I could move the tarp to the sewing machine and stitch it down.
I hope this tip will help others in their DIY tarps.

I wondered if that stuff would work on nylon. Guess it does. I'll have to try that out. Anything to keep from having to pin! Thanks for the tip.

Yes the tarp was Silnylon and the patches were untreated nylon. It was not a real tight attachement that I had but I could handle the tarp and move it to the sewing machine to sew without to much trouble. No pins were used.

It was in the basement sewing room at the spray booth
I would need to ask my wife that question. I think that many fabric stores would have it. Also places that have machine embroidery supplies and sewing supplies. The machine that she used is an Bernina with the embroidery setup. I assume that if you could locate a Bernina sewing store they would have the products. There are several different kinds available. What I used was the MAX brand.

I will go down and test the other brands that she has and report back the results.

    Adhesive test

My wife had five different adhesives.
All test were spraying the nylon patch and pressing to the sil that was not sprayed.

The one I used was MAX Textile Spray Adhesive.
I will rate this one at a 5

The next one was Helmar 101 Quilt Basting Spray
I will also rate this one at a 5

The third one is 606 Spray and Fix spray on fusible web. This one is to be activated with an iron. I read the instructions after I sprayed We would not want to heat our sil to set this one.
However, without heat it would rate at about a 3

The fourth one is Helmar HR Five temporary Adhesive Spray.
I would rate this one about a 4 or 5

The last one is 404 Spray and Fix a permanet repositionable craft adhesive.
Rate about 4 or 5 also.

None of these sprays have a great deal of holding power on the sil. The nylon that I sprayed could be pulled off without much difficulty. However, the fabric that I sprayed does not slide arount on the sil. It's stuck so that you can get it sewn on without the use of pins. Just spray, stick in position and sew.

Did you happen to test it on two pcs of sil together?
My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.

Spraying on one piece of sil only sticks about as well as spraying on the nylon and sticking it to the sil. Spraying both pieces of sil and sticking together gives a much better bond. So for better stick you could spray the adheasive to both surfaces. However, if overspray is a problem only doing one surface is enought that you can sew without any problems. It really keeps the two from sliding around.
I know that there are lots of different spray adheasives that could be used. I do not know if some of these would gum up the needle on the machine.
