I had to pick up my daughter from college this past Sunday so I decided to find a place to camp overnight nearby and to break up the 14 hour round trip. After getting a recommendation from a fellow HF member, I decided on Ministry Creek in the Allegheny National Forest. It was my first time in this forest and unfortunately I did not have as much time as I would have liked to explore it but it was great to camp overnight in a beautiful little spot not far off the trail head parking lot. I was not able to go far in because of a meniscus tear that I'm getting repaired next Friday, as well as limited time in order to get to my daughters college and pack up the amazing amount of accumulated stuff over the past year... Gee, I wonder where she gets it..
The drive out from just north of NYC was on and off rain and after probably 4 hours the clouds started to break up and by the time I reached the forest the weather was perfect. The night was just slightly breezy and lows got down to the mid 50s - perfect sleeping weather for me.
It was also my first time out with my new HG cuben with doors. I really loved the translucency of it and being able to see the moon and the trees illuminated by the moonlight. The campsite was alongside the creek so I had the sound of the babbling brook to lull me to sleep.
I plan to go back there some day soon and further explore the alleghenys, and bring my fly rod next time. There was a lot of fishing going on there.
