This may be more of a question about fabric material, but just wanted to get some thoughts on which superfly to get. 70d ($245, 50ozs) or silnylon ($130, 19 ozs).
With 2 small girls (3 yr old and 3 mo old) we mostly car/quad/boat camp, but I do hike some, so I thought having the lighter tarp may be a good addition to my gear collection. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Do what needs to be done when it needs doing.
If you plan to take it on hikes, go with the silnylon for weight and cost savings.
Don't let life get in the way of living.
IMHO the only reason to the the 70D Superfly is if you GOTTA have the Multicam pattern. A hefty weight and $ premium.

I thought 70D was describing the weight of the silnylon material? On the BWDD site there are various weights 70D, 30D, etc.
I could be wrong, but when I was researching materials for my tarp, it was explained to me that the ##D was the weight/thickness of the silnylon.
I went with the 70D only because it fit in my budget, otherwise I would've gone with the 30D. My BWDD Hex 2.1 weighs 3lbs9.1oz

Waterproof 70D (70 Denier) is usually PU coated and weighs about about 1.9 oz/sq yd before coating and 3 oz sq yard with the coating.
$ premium is primarily due to the one copyrighted/patented source for the material, I'm sure.

I do like the multicam and will probably buy one, but I already have the silnylon Superfly. The heavy multicam would strictly be for the trips like you mentioned, by boat, atv, or for me weekend wheeling when I finish my K5 project. Can't go wrong with the silnylon Superfly though, mine actually seems to keep the rain away. Rained a lot before I got it and has around here since, but everytime it's supposed to rain and I set it up hoping for a downpour to test it out...no rain in my backyard.
