    Bugnet - check
Bugnet sprayed with Permethrin - check (as of today)
Mosquito convention under the tarp, dozens, especially 24 hrs after the rain

I should mention that I've been camped next to a swamp in Jersey, so, well, you know the routine.

So I am good in my hammock, just entering, exiting and hanging out under the tarp are the issue.

Treat your gear and clothing with permethrin.
The "protective circle" the treatment gives will keep the bugs at bay. I have seen this work in my own skeeter infested backyard. The mosquitoes will buzz around 5 feet away from the hammock and not come near.
    Do not treat your tarp.

Once your gear is treated, there is no need for addtional devices. Thermacell's work fine, but add weight and bulk to your kit. You need fuel and the chemical strips in the thermacell. If your opposed to treating your gear, then the thermacell is a great solution.

I also treated a hat and bandana that can be worn for other activities. As the others have said, the treatment provides a protective circle. My kayaking friends are jealous. They were swarmed with bugs, and I was not.

Treated clothing can be worn for other activities as well...the parade, a night of fireworks, an outdoor concert, etc. I've treated the folding chairs we use for events or the beach. It works. Beach towels treated will keep the pest away also.

I've even sprayed the backyard before a party. It worked better than any other bug deterent I've tried.

If you have a vegetable garden, spraying the entire yard can prove catastrophic for pollination. Been there, done that.

    +1 on the Thermocell.

Not looking to go off the OP's thought, but the OFF brand outdoor lanterns use the EXACT same pads (d-cis/trans allethrin 21.97%), you just have to cut the pad to fit and their refill kits are cheaper (I refill my own Thermocell Cartridges).

The REPEL Insect Repellent Stakes have .25% of the same active ingredient and fit nicely in a backpack and burn for 4 hours also.

Those Coleman Mosquito Coils has the same active ingredient coming in at .25% also.

I have used all the above in some wet, mosquito partying swamp areas here in Florida (mosquito = state bird ) while hunting and none have let me down.

Mosquitoes can bite through the skin of an alligator, if I recall. The bottom of a hammock is no barrier to them ... unless it's treated with Permethrin.

As far as the top side, I agree with you, not sure what treating the tarp would really do for a camper.

Personally, I soak my entire hammock, including bug netting, but don't do anything to my tarp.

I like the idea of hanging a treated bandanna on the suspension, but I avoid treating my tree straps, as that would kill all the critters that travel the super-highway that tree trunks are in the forest. Kinda like the comment of treating an entire yard. Lots of unnecessary and negative death due to over-kill,-- no pun intended.

Single layer I agree, but from my understanding they can't get through a double layer because of the crossing fiber patterns, can't get their sucker between the second layer of threads.

Permethrin is an insecticide, not an insect repellant. While bugs may have some aversion to the permethrin it is not a very good repellent, but it will kill any that contact it. A good repellant would probably serve you better, I treat the body of my hammocks with permethrin, and hang a thermacell under the tarp. The reasoning is I want to keep the area under the tarp bug free, and I want to kill any bugs trying to bite me through the hammock bottom. Kind of a right tool for the job scenario, unless you goal is to kill every bug out there, and even then they would have to contact the treated fabric to kill them. I have noticed the skeeters have a tendency to stay about an inch from my treated clothes, and completely avoid the area around the thremacell. Hope this helps.
