Thanks guys. This post was really designed to bring out the answers I was looking for. I am pretty convinced now that I can develop a hanging setup that will meet every need I have. My big old tent is pretty weather proof, but it may never get used again for sleeping. Maybe as a portable kitchen on an extended car camp, but I think I'll be swinging under the trees for the nights! I mainly car camp out of a 4wd but I can see that with a spare tarp, a couple of tent poles and a good hammock setup for sleeping I can deal with pretty much anything and still be comfortable. My 57 yo frame was getting most hostile toward sleeping on the ground, so I went to a stretcher, but even that is not as comfortable as a hammock.
When it comes to kayaking, that's where I can see the hammock being the duck's nuts! I am planning some 7-10 day paddles down the Murray River here in Australia over the next couple of years. I was originally planning on buying a new 4 season light weight tent to take along, but for half the money I can set up a pretty good hammock camping setup.
I plan to do a couple of 1-2 nighters to get used to hammock camping, and then I thnk I will be right to go on my first leg in September.
Thanks all, I'm loving this forum!
