Porch mode?

I usually go with sticks, makes for a nice rustic theme (don't mind the converted sleeping bag UQ, old pic)...

I tie to other trees if available. If not, I use my trekking poles.
If I can find, with a glace, a couple of long sticks then I'll use them instead of the poles...just cause.

No right or wrong way to do it. Just go with whatever mood you're in.

Any particular reason you prefer to go to trees? Just easier than finding/using extra bits?

Going to trees usually allows for a bit taller porch and less stuff to trip over at ground level.

In order of preference:

Nearby trees
Sticks found nearby
My buddy's hiking poles

All three have worked on separate occasions. This is one of my favorite aspects of hammocking; you don't just pick a piece of flat ground and set up your tent, you have to assess the site and find the most suitable solution for your current needs.

I don't like extra tidbits if I can avoid them. That little issue of mine is the only thing keeping me from falling in love with the Ridgerunners; bridge hammocks need tidbits to make them work right. So when I can, I try to avoid tidbits. The trees are already there and I don't have to balance anything while I wrap cord and set stakes; just tie and go do something else.

I'm also exceptionally lazy, so there's that.

I always put my handles at the top. Its simple to do and keeps your
handles clean and a firm footing in the ground.

Are you just flipping a coin on which side to put down? With shifting winds I can see me choosing wrong once it is sleep time
