A canoe camping trip would be awesome. However, I don't think that the canoe camping opportunities are as good or as plentiful in western NY as they are in the Adirondacks.

There are a lot of great state forests in western NY, but I think the Finger Lakes National Forest fits what you are looking for as far as accessibility (about 2 1/2 hours from the border) and hiking trails. Some of our Frozen Finger Hang alumni were thinking about returning there in August for a Thawed Finger Hang. It would be great to have our brothers from the North join us!
