DIY build - what do you use to whip ends?

I'm a newbie building my first hammock, gathered end, 2 layer... I'll sew channels in the ends to run cord through, just to help make a 'ball' for the whipping (not to hang the hammock directly through).

The question is, what cord/rope do you guys recommend to whip with? I have some Amsteel in 7/64" and 1/8", Dynaglide, and 550 paracord, etc.. Do you recommend something more "string-like" or a "light rope" ? Would it be better to be something less slippery than dyneema?

Looking forward to my first hang... Thanks!

If you have an end channel, run a cord through that and tie it off creating a bun in the end of the hammock. Then a larkshead my whoopies over that bun making sure I've got a good enough size ball of fabric that it won't slip out of the larks head. Make sense?

I used paracord....I think that I gutted it first, but not sure. I wouldn't waste good rope on this application. You need it to hold a knot so the slippery stuff is not a good choice.

Thanks guys. I think I have the "how" down, it is just the "what".. sounds like paracord is the winner...

paracord is cheap and works fine. I use it on mine and have had no issues.

Not to throw a wrench in your hanging bliss, but I still can't figure out why more folks don't use this knot instead of whipping- it can not slide out.

It's the only way I'll ever rig a gathered end hammock.

Ja, Klauss you booger...you beat me to it!

I tried whipping but now only ever use an overhand knot after gathering the ends.. Very easy & very secure

For tying the gathered end, I use Marshalltown braided mason line, and have not had any problems.......RR
