    Tarps- Adequate Coverage

Hi all, I'm wondering about tarp sizes. I , like most have a huge comfortable dream hammock. I have yet buy a tarp large enough to feel really comfortable hanging out in a really bad storm. I've always felt like I was lacking adequate coverage. So for yall that have 11.5-12ft+ hammocks .... Please tell me all about your tarp !

Actually, I'll second that, providing you aren't looking for lightweight (can't remember exactly but over 1kg (2.2lb))

I have one and it is hhhuuggge, my last trip with it, I set it up as a hex with doors and it was like a small house.

I have now upgraded to a diy winter tarp (sil) that is less than half the weight, I love my new one but kinda miss not being able to throw a rave for elephants inside it.

Pros: massive, loads of tie out points, bombproof, no need for seam sealing, inexpensive, pu coated polyester so low stretch, great company to deal with.

Cons: weight, it may be too big.

I hear ya, I kind assumed I'd have one of two routes. Either really heavy or really expensive.

I use a DIY 10x12. I carry it year round man. For me it is worth the weight to have the versatility.

I like my Kelty Noahs 12. Lots of tieouts for just about every configuration that you would ever need.

What kind of coverage do you have, and what are you looking for? I.e is the superfly or old man winter too small?

It seems to be a trade off with size and weight. As I am quite small, with a smallish hammock - who likes big sag and low pitch - I can get away with a small tarp for basic coverage. What I've done is take the advice of those who use separate 'doors' that can be added for inclement weather. With as low a hang as can be got away with, tarps don't need to be extra wide to get almost to the ground.

Taps with pullouts . . lots of positioning options as well as providing needed space inside when pitching the tarp closer in. Shug did a few great vids that help no end.

So, you find you really want big. . Perhaps a cuben fibre mix might be good for you? . $ $

I'm not sure about this two tarps its been a while since I've checked them out and can't remember the dimensions. I do remember though never really feeling settled on a certain tarp.
