it's more the strength of the weld that matters more than the size of the wire. alot of hardware store rings have weak welds. mine supposedly have a minimum break strength of 400# but some are alot stronger, the batch was supposed to be rated at 1000, but some broke at 400 (hence the 400 rating) so they didn't make the cut for the customer buying 1000#rings. so i got a box of these extras that they had in stock, some have better looking welds than others. since the absolute min is supposed to be 400, i go through and inspect them and toss the worst (400) welds and just use the better looking ones. the ones that get used have a signifigantly stronger weld than the weaker 400# rings which i toss.
That gives me a huge confidence boost. Hard to believe, but great news!
