    DIY Torso Length Underquilt

My latest project is a torso or 3/4 length down underquilt. I haven't filled it with down yet, but have finished all the steps up to adding the down, sewing the end shut and adding the suspension.

I started with the usual 1.1 ripstop seconds from D.I.Y. Gear Supply and using MADD777's calculator (underquilt section of the spreadsheet) from the DIY Burro Top Quilt calculator.

A lot of this has been done throughout the forum so I'll just post the pictures and leave a link to the .pdf on my Google Drive. There will also be a link to the original .rtf file also - the .rtf weighs in at 55 megs due to the number and size of the images. The .pdf is only 2.6 megs in size and looks like crap after the conversion I used. The pictures are large and show alot of detail.

The final dimensions are nine 3" baffles and is 56 inches long and 46 inches wide. For a 20% overstuff it will take 1.33 oz of 850 fill down in each chamber for a total of 12 oz. This is calculated for 0 to 20* depending on how warm you sleep.

Sorry - my scale is on the fritz so I don't know the exact weight. I'll post the correct weight after I fix the scale. I believe it's around 8 oz or so.

I used sewn channels to save weight.

    On to the pictures!

Part 2 - the baffles being sewn to the 2nd piece of material. I tried to detail everything and use tape as a guide for those who are confused about the baffle process.

Looks really good their Lost Biker. Seems for me some of the confusion comes from having the ends more fitted so creating heavier darting. But as I seem to understand it, with a differential cut and if you were to sew it with these more fitted ends, what darting would be needed (i base this question on needing to dart each channel as opposed to every other one)?

However, not sure I am making any sense!

Oh - your making sense. All I do is make two darts at both ends (about where the second baffle in is) and that evens the fabric up. Yes, the middle is about 2 inches wider than the ends.
You can do a dart per channel, but I prefer to wait to the end and use 2 darts on each end to line it up. The outer piece will pull in when you follow the lines on the inner piece. The darts are for squaring up the end pieces and they're not large darts. I just "pinch and twist the material like a "Z" and sew them over.
To be honest, even if you just sew everything closed with no darts, it'll come out ok - just be a little lop-sided and once everything is cinched up with the shock cord suspension you won't even notice.

Clear as mud, I know. There's getting everything perfect and there's just getting it done and then everything looks the same at the end - or close enough to not matter.

Odd question to revive this thread on - but I read that you used a green sharpie on the 1.1 material to lay out the lines but what did you use to draw the lines on the no-see-um?

Silver metallic sharpie fine point. Easy to see in the underquilt cave.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

    @ Lost Biker

Quick question: how did you calculate it? How are your experiences?

    - MAD777's calculator -> outer fabric - just long side plus 2x baffle height
    - CatSplat's Calculator V0.2 -> outer fabric - just short side plus 2x baffle height

    or

    no baffle height additionally calculated?

Plus 2x baffle required yes / no, or is it without? Without problems?

Hello Wolle. I used Catsplats calculator. This is my winter quilt and it has 3 inch baffles. I've used it down to 5* F. Thats about my limit as I'm a cold sleeper.

great question to Torso Length Underquilt:
outer fabric Plus(additional) 2x baffle height on the long side required yes / no?

    for example:
    Inner fabric 63 inch long
outer fabric 69inch long (3 inch baffles). What to do with the 6 inch ---- hm darts or ....?
    (without hem and seam allowance)

Please excuse my bad english. I hope you understand what I mean
